My neighbour has petroglyphs in her backyard
International artist Sjoerd Maartens’ artistic book ‘Mi bisiña tin petroglifo den su cura’ (My neighbour has petroglyphs in her backyard) is now available in limited edition at our Museum. The publication contains his artwork in the form of pictures which have been exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum Aruba from March 2022 to March 2023.
Aruba has 33 archaeological sites with rock drawings, painted about thousand years ago by the Indigenous people of the island. Some you can admire at the National Park Aruba and Ayo. In his pictures the artist combined historic rock drawing sites with everyday elements, this way creating awareness that in unexpected places we can find treasures of our ancestors that need to be protected. Aruban archaeologist Harold Kelly collaborated with Sjoerd providing archaeological information and insights on the pictographs and petroglyphs of Aruba in this publication.
